Weight Watchers Meetings Belfast

It was Libby Mallon's young daughter who encouraged her to join Weight Watchers, and she's since gone on to lose four and a half stone. She tells us how she did it…

What made you decide to join Weight Watchers?

I had joined in 2006 and lost five stone, but then I had my youngest daughter in 2008 and it all went back on again. In July 2016 I was out for a girls' night with my friends, when I posed for a photo. When my friend sent me the photo the next morning and I saw myself, I nearly felt sick. I made the decision that I was going back to Weight Watchers the following Tuesday morning. So that Tuesday, my wee daughter, Katie Lee came and got me out of bed and reminded me that I had made a promise, so I had no choice but to go!

How did it feel, starting again?

I suppose I felt a bit embarrassed at the thought of going in there and being all the way back at square one. But when I walked through the door, I felt immediately welcomed by my leader, Lorna, and my friend, Sharon, who had lost seven stone with Weight Watchers.

How was the class?

The class itself is fantastic and the people there are fabulous, they are so supportive. We all learn so much but at the same time we have a great laugh. Lorna is a brilliant leader, she's really on her toes, and always there to talk to you if you need it. Some people come, get weighed and immediately go, but they miss so much. You pick up so many tips if you stay there, simple things like putting grapes in the freezer to help with sugar cravings. I'm below goal now, but I still never miss a class.

What changes did you make?

Not that many! A lot of people come into Weight Watchers and they think it's going to be expensive because they think that they have to buy all different food, but that's not the case at all. I have three kids, we make home cooked meals and I eat the same as everyone else. The only difference for me now is that I use a smaller plate. I used to have massive portions and in my head, I'd think that I had to finish it all, but now I just have a smaller plate to everyone else, I fill it up with food and it feels like I'm having loads. I also make sure to drink lots of water.

Do you exercise regularly?

Yes, I go for a regular walk with my friend, Sharon. We try to go each morning. It makes it a lot easier when you have someone to go with. I've joined a gym now too and I go twice a week for toning.

How has losing weight changed your life?

I'm a lot more confident. I can go into any shop I like now, I'm not limited to specific places, or buying bigger clothes off the internet. I used to be a size 20, but now I'm a size 8 or 10. It's strange because sometimes I still find myself reaching for a size 20, I still have to get used to the fact that I'm a lot smaller! Katie Lee is delighted that I've finally done it, we were passing by a market food stall with burgers and everything the other day, it was on our left, so she told me to turn my head to the right; I thought she was trying to get me to look at toys or something, but she was doing her best to distract me and keep me on track!

What advice would you give to other people looking to do it?

Be prepared. If I know I'm going for a meal at the weekend, I make sure I'm really good all week and then I can enjoy it. Most of all, just do it! Join the class and stay for the meeting. I recommend it one hundred per cent. Being in Weight Watchers has totally changed my life for the better.
